Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
