Seven alleged members of German far-left organization face trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
