Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
