Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to contest certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
